From noon until 3 p.m. today [Sat. April 5] WBAI's producers and public affairs team will bring you LIVE rolling coverage of the labor and social justice protests scheduled for New York City and Washington D.C. against the Trump/Musk junta's assault on workers' rights and the U.S. Constitution.
These events are part of a national day of action that's scheduled at more than 1,300 locations in all 50 states as well as several countries. We will also take listener calls at 212-209-2877.
The AFL-CIO is one of the primary sponsors of the events around the country that also involve hundreds of community based peace and social justice groups in a grassroots movement not seen since the Vietnam War and civil rights era.
In less than 100 days the Trump administration has lodged an unprecedented assault on labor rights and the U.S. Constitution by firing hundreds of thousands of federal workers and closing government agencies established by the U.S. Congress.
Throughout the country, and here in our region, permanent legal residents like Mahmoud Khalil, the Columbia University student and Gaza Peace activist, are being arrested and incarcerated for deportation without any due process.
At the same time, the Trump administration has frozen billions of dollars in already Congressionally-appropriated federal aid for local governments, counties, states and nonprofits that operate vital safety net programs like food pantries for the hungry.
The Trump/Musk junta is similarly withholding already appropriated Federal Emergency Management Agency aid to local governments hit by a natural disaster.
Here in New York City, the Trump administration actually seized $80 million in previously appropriated federal FEMA aid that had been deposited in the City of New York's bank account to help cover the costs of the migrant crisis.
