Listen: NY Airport Workers ‘Raise Up’ as Others Continue to Struggle
By Bob Hennelly
On this episode of the Stuck Nation Labor Radio Hour, we hear how through months of collective action ten thousand members of 32 BJ SEIU working at the region’s airports run by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will see a significant pay boost of $2.25 over the next 13 months—and $25 by 2032.
We speak with Rob Hill, an executive vice president with 32 BJ SEIU and Sophia Harris, a union member who works at JFK.
In the second half of the show, we speak with Tal Frieden with the Alliance for a Greater New York’s Raise Up New York campaign pressing for a living wage that actually advances the living conditions of the workforce that relies on it.
Deshunta Meredith, president of DC 37’s Local 2054, also joins the discussion. Local 2054 represents thousands of employees at the City University of New York who actually make less than the New York State minimum wage despite the fact they are represented by a union.
