Listen: NYS Comptroller Talks Democratic Party Debacle, Stock Transfer Tax, Medicare Advantage…
By Bob Hennelly
The Republican Party sweep of the White House and Congress has prompted fierce debate within the Democratic Party as to what went wrong who's responsible for the loss. Here in New York State, Democrats did manage to flip three House seats. But 2024 saw Trump pick 95,000 votes in New York City while Democrats loss a half-million votes, according to the New York Times.
On this episode of the Stuck Nation Labor Radio Hour, we ask New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli for his take on what went wrong and what his party needs to do to win again.
DiNapoli talks about the political risks for Gov. Hochul in her plan to re-impose a reduced congestion pricing regime. He discusses the Stock Transfer Tax and the controversy over the imposition of Medicare Advantage on New York City retired civil servants.
In the second half of the show we check in with RN Carol Tanzi, chief shop steward for United Steelworkers Nurses Local 4-200 which represents 1,700 nurses at Robert Wood Johnson University. Last year, Local 4-200 stayed out on strike from August through December in an epic battle for safer staffing. The stakes were so high that Robert Wood Johnson spent well over $150 million in an attempt to break the union but Local 4-200 prevailed.
Carol catches us up on the ongoing fight for safer staffing.
