Listen: New York City’s Deadly Response Times

By Bob Hennelly

On this episode of the Stuck Nation Labor Radio Hour, we talk to DC 37 Local 3621 FDNY EMS President Vinnie Variale about a really alarming increase in EMS response times for medical emergencies that are now averaging over ten minutes. Only one in five heart attack victims is actually surviving—the worst survival rate in more than ten years.

But first up, as the world’s nations gather here in New York City for the UN General Assembly,  the International Labor Organization reports that wealth inequality continues to grow globally, while the share of global income workers enjoy has stagnated. The troubling trend of young adults that are idle also continues to be an issue. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Boeing workers remain on strike after management offered a raise in pay in exchange for the loss of bonuses and pensions.

Here in New York, we have an update on the Law360 Union News Guild CWA strike we covered last week. We also speak with TWU International President John Samuelsen about a tentative contract his union has with American Airlines, as well as his take on the  2024 election.
