Listen: Strike At Strand; TWU Local 100 Prez Doubles Down on Medicare Advantage Push—And More

UAW Local 2179 workers at the iconic Strand Bookstore in NYC are striking this holiday season.

By Bob Hennelly

While union density in the U.S. continues to be about half of what it was in the 1980s there are significant signs of a major rebound.

In 2023, there were over 16 million workers in unions, close to 200,000 more members than the year before while a record number of workers filed to form a union that same year. 2023 also  saw a 280 percent spike in strike activity from the year before, as a half-a-million  workers were willing to put it all on the line by striking.

Over the weekend, 90 plus members of UAW Local 2179 who work at the world famous Strand Bookstore in lower Manhattan did just that. On this episode of the Stuck Nation Labor Radio Hour, we will get the latest.

We also continue our TWU Local 100 leadership forum with President Richard Davis who is standing for re-election of the 40,000 member union that operates the New York City Transit system.

And we get an update from Deshunta Meredith, president of DC 37’s Local 2054, which represents thousands of workers at the City University of New York who are currently not even making the New York State minimum wage despite having ratified a new contract in February.
