Listen: Smoking Sparks UAW Exit from NJ AFL-CIO; Bronx Midwives Fight for Their Lives, too

The fight for smoke-free casinos in Atlantic City is workplace safety issue--and it's heating up.

By Bob Hennelly

On this episode of the Stuck Nation Labor Radio Hour, we look at the UAW’s decision to leave the New Jersey AFL-CIO following the contentious fight over smoking inside Atlantic City casinos. We also talk to midwives from the Bronx is search of a fare contract for the vital work they do.

First up, UAW Region 9 Assistant Director Ray Jensen gives us an update on the union’s fight for smoke-free casinos in Atlantic City, as well as Local 2300’s successful strike at Cornell University.

New York State Nurses Association [NYSNA] Midwife Nicolette Gressett, then talks about how her Health + Hospitals colleagues at Jacobi Hospital and North Central Bronx Hospital have been working without a contract for over a year.

Like clinical and support staff throughout H+H’s municipal health care system, midwives in the Bronx are working shorthanded, serving patients irrespective of their immigration or insurance status.

It’s time for management to deliver for this 24-7 essential workforce.
