Listen: NJ’s Battle Over Smoke-Free Casinos; Hospitals in Peril

By Bob Hennelly

On this episode of the Stuck Nation Labor Radio Hour, we check back in with UAW Region 9 assistant director Ray Jensen about the UAW’s righteous battle to secure a smoke-free workplace for thousands of Atlantic City casino workers. He is joined by powerhouse attorney Nancy Erika Smith, with an update on the legal battle to provide casino workers with the same workplace protections against the deadly secondhand smoke that every other worker takes for granted in the State of New Jersey.

We also hear from Craig Ford, president of 1199J AFSCME and Doug Placa,  executive director of JNESO District 1, representing nurses. They update us on some troubling labor developments at  Hoboken University Medical Center & Christ Hospital in Jersey City that will have serious consequences for both the healthcare workers and the communities that rely on those hospitals.

The NJ AFL-CIO warns that both hospitals could soon close, putting over 2,000 good-paying jobs at risk while greatly reducing healthcare options for the entire community in a state hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.
